Sydney Advice

Well you finally made it to Sydney hey 🙂 WELCOME

What to see in Sydney

To be honest we do not know where to start as Sydney has so many cool hings to offer.

Circular Quay
So it is obvious that you know to check out the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House at Circular Quay. Be sure to do the free pedestrian walk on the harbour bridge. Did you know that you can climb one of the sanstone pillars for only $20….this is a far more affordable than the $400ish bridge climb.

Mrs Macquaries Chair has proven itself to be a popular sunset spot within walking distance of the city.

Darling Harbour
It shocks me how many people have no idea of it. Darling Harbour is Sydneys second and lesser known waterfront area. Darling Harbour and Barangaroo are full of bars, cafes, restaurants and likely the area to look into for night action. Be sure to head beyond the water towards central station for more atmosphere and options. The Watershed Bar is good at sunset as the sun reflects on the city skyline whilst the city lights up.

Eastern Suburbs (Bondi beach)

The famous Bondi to Coogee Coastal walk. This is Sydneys most known coastal walk however there is so many coastline walks which I will leave links below. To be honest, as a local, I sugest kicking off at Coogee and having a late lunch at Little Jack Horner, Morning Glory or upstairs at The Pavillion. Then spend a few hours enjoying the coastal walk and ending in Bondi. If you do this well then it is beer o clock. There is many cool bars that I suggest you google as we are all different.

Sydney has an ever growing brewery scene in the Inner West area which is just a 10 to 15 min train/bus from the city.

Also consider a free walking tour ‘I’m Free Walking Tours‘ runs three times a day and is a fun and informative introduction to Sydney.

Getting to/from the airport

The airport train stations are Sydneys only private train stations. These stations are own by Macqaurie Bank and they charge ridiculous prices just merely to use their platforms. For roughly the same price you can get a direct airport transfer to your hostel/hotel though these can be timely if you are stopping 10 times. We suggest contacting your accommodation as they will offer you the best option. All Sydney transport runs on the Opal Card system which you can buy from the airport and at the time of writing it is in the trial stages with android/apple so check it out on your app store. Keep in mind that you can also use a Visa or Mastercard also. For those staying in Bondi or Coogee there is a cheap public bus from the airport, you can find it on google maps….the 400 bus.

Getting round town

So Sydney can be quite spaced out. For those living in the CBD (Buildings) or Kings Cross everywhere is walkable depending on your laziness levels :). We always recommend walking round cities whilst you travel so to see more of the city and burn off those beers. If you are in Bondi Junction, Bondi Beach, Manly (far from Sydney) then you definetily will be needing to use public transport. Opal cards can be purchased from all train stations, newsagents, convenience stores and supermarkets (and airports). Like mentioned above please be sure to check your app store or tap on and off with your visa or mastercard.

Need a sim card with data

Every convenience store, petrol station and supermarket sells sim cards not just the phone shops at the airport. Please note all sim cards purchased in Austalia can be used nation wide. In Straya our main carriers are Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. The best valued pre paid deals are smaller providers that are substantially cheaper than what is offered by Telstra, Optus & Vodafone yet they still use the same networks.

The easiest option is to go to one of the phone shops at the airport. Compare the current prepaid options and don’t hesitate to ask the friendly staff. They will have you connected before you leave the airport.

Though if you are not in a rush you can swing past a convenience store or any supermarket that have cheap sim cards on offer though dont expect and assistance. Amaysim has always be good value.
